I think check works best.
If he has a 9 he's betting nearly all the time. If he has a busted flush he knows he has to bet to win. If you bet he will obv just muck so I think value is lost.
And if he does check behind then all you've done is give up a little info.
Edit: And if he does have like 8's or something like that then he was never gonna call the river anyway. And you find out his range and stuff.

sometimes if we make a smallish bet (250-300) we get checkraised here..
